Critical review of studies on the representation of architecture and use of the image in science and art

The story of XY

xy dimensioni del disegno

"XY dimensions of design" was founded in 1986 for CEDIS as critical review of studies on the representation of architecture and use of images in science, technology and art.

The program of the journal is to stimulate and disseminate the theoretical and applied research produced in the scientific sector of the design, as well as to initiate any possible connection with other areas of knowledge that relates to bi-dimensionality of images to which the Cartesian coordinates in the name refer.

xy dimensioni del disegnoThe first issue contains the basic relationships of the conference "The scientific foundations of representation" in Rome, programmatic starting point of a growing scene of interest; the magazine continues developing monographic and interdisciplinary themes, including dossiers such as the regesto "1968-1988 twenty years of drafted architecture", the collection "Survey Dossier", the exhibition of "New trends" and the survey on the binomial "Graphics-Architecture".

In 1989 it promotes the conference in Perugia "Survey: history and science" of which two years later collects the results for the future development specification.

In 1997 it promotes the conference in Perugia "Points of epochal signs" that for the first time focuses on the architectural debate about "periphery" from a linguistic and figurative point of view.

Since the first numbers, XY is supported with contribution of prominent figures such Michele Emmer, Decio Gioseffi, Ernst H. Gombrich, Richard L. Gregory, Corrado Maltese, Ruggero Pierantoni, Franco Purini, Lucio Saffaro, Vittorio Ugo.

Starting from number 11-12 in 1990, the magazine is published by Officina Edizioni and since 1992 is accompanied by the series "The books of XY" that today has reached the 16th volume, with the intention of offering a repertoire of critical essays geared to explore the themes introduced by the magazine, with the belief that the deepening of knowledge is based on intelligent comparison between different disciplines.
