In his editorial, Paolo Giandebiaggi reflects on the deep connection between representation and imagination: two actions that may seem distinct, yet both generate images in the mind. Whether through drawing, painting, cinema, poetry, dance, cartography, or images of outer space, every form of representation helps shape thought, knowledge and visions of the world.
In this issue of “XY”, dedicated to Images and faraway spaces, the image becomes a tool for exploring the unknown: from prehistoric graffiti to maps, from the stars to cosmic journeys, and up to the future perspectives opened up by the contemporary proliferation of images. To represent also means to imagine: to give form to what we do not yet know, transforming images into a threshold between reality, dream, science, and invention.
